Japanese Aucuba (Aucuba japonica), shrub of cities

The Japanese aucuba is a dioecious shrub that is very commonly planted in urban areas because its foliage is persistent but also because it is very resistant to pollution. In addition, it is very rustic, the shady places do not disturb or sea spray.

Its opposite leaves are leathery and lustrous, variegated or spotted yellow or white depending on the variety. They measure up to 20 cm long and can be toothed at the edges.

Trees of about ten centimeters with purple-red flowers develop in April. Provided that male feet and female feet are present, the female aucuba will then give small red fruits about 1 cm in diameter, quite decorative but inedible, which will remain on the shrub from November to April. The male feet will bear yellow anthers.
