The capillary or "hair of Venus" is an indoor fern with light and delicate foliage that is perfectly ornamental provided it is in a rather humid and shaded environment. Indeed, it is native to the humid undergrowth of tropical forests so the heat of the apartments can interfere. However, the cold does not suit him either: it needs a minimum of 10° C and will become even obsolete if the temperature drops to -2° C.
Adiantum capillus-veneris is the most widespread with its light triangular, thin and fragile bipinnate or tripinnate fronds which, depending on the variety, are going to be curly, crenate or wavy. The stems can reach 70 cm long with fan-shaped pinnules on a glossy black petiole. Spores form on the edges of the fronds. It is a persistent fern whose rhizome is little tracing.

Ideal soil and exposure for Adiantum
Adiantum is cultivated with filtered and indirect light in summer, vivid and sifted in winter, in a substrate composed equally of potting soil, sand and peat, which can remain always fresh.
Date of sowing, division and planting of the capillary
You can sow the spores in the spring at 21° C. Otherwise, you can split clumps in the spring.
Repotting also took place in the spring but this fern likes to be cramped in its container so it can stay in the same pot by just removing the old earth and replace it with a cooler mix.
Board of maintenance and culture of Adiantum
The delicate point of the Adiantum culture lies in obtaining a good hygrometry: high humidity and good aeration. To do this, sprinkle with non-calcareous water at room temperature to keep the soil fresh but not saturated with water.
In summer as well as in winter when the temperature is around 20° C, spray daily to prevent the fronds from drying out.
If your capillary has been too hot, bathe the pot in a basin of water and spray regularly until new shoots appear.
In the spring, remove the old dry fronds.
Diseases, pests and parasites of the capillary
Mealybugs sometimes attack Adiantum.
Location and favorable association of Adiantum
It is an indoor plant that is grown in front of a window facing north.
Recommended varieties of Adiantum for indoor use
There are more than 200 species and more Adiantum capillus-veneris which is the true capillary, although Adiantum raddianum or cuneatum being very close by being more robust with foliage a little less delicate, but you can also opt for Adiantum raddianum fragrantissimum with fragrant foliage, Adiantum pedatum oblong, lobed or toothed segments, Adiantum venustum…
