Masset (Typha), or reed of the ponds

The cattail is an aquatic and rustic rhyzomatous plant found on the edge of ponds, hence the name of the pond reed. Its long, thick rhizomes that run beneath the surface of the water can become invasive if there is little water. Only deep water will prevent this invasion. Reed beds are often the refuge of many birds.

Deciduous, pointed foliage is banded and erect, light green in color, forming a tuft up to 2 m in height.

The floral spikes are brown, velvety, fusiform like a distaff, and measure up to 25 cm long. Over time, they blanch and are disemboweled leaving a whitish silky material. They were used a lot in dry bouquets at one time.

Today, these reeds are used for the treatment of wastewater in the lagoon and phytopurification zones.
