The garden before transformation

  • A space all in length bordered by an office building on one side and by a very high blind wall on the other.
  • The garden is off-center compared to housing. A link must be created from the terrace below to the lawn.
  • The garden is placed on a slab of parking. We must take into account the constraints of weight, tightness and technical installations (VMC, etc.).

The project

  • To meet the demand of owners who wanted a multifunctional garden, the landscape has partitioned the space with the help of plants and minerals. Corner terrace and sitting area marked by the alignment of stakes on the ground, large grassed playground, cabanon corner bounded by a line of slate on the ground, swing corner and kitchen garden behind the gate.
  • The massifs line the garden in a harmony of green and white. Their round shapes soften the rigorous layout. Shrubs are preferably pruned (not stems) to keep a pretty shape. They give a better perception of the scale of the project.

A garden, whatever its size and environment, is always there to bring dreams.

Christian Fournet, landscaper.

The terrace

The terrace, dining area

A terrace area in front of the living room

The terrace space is arranged between the glass facade of the house and a blind wall. Imputrescible wood blades (ipé) dress the floor and two sides. It is large enough to accommodate private receptions.

In the giant resin pots of palm trees (Chamaerops) and cordylines with reddish foliage give an exotic note. The balls of nepetas with small purple flowers come to break the rigor of the lines.

Corner terrace and facade

A pine tree with tortuous silhouette serves as a plant gate which opens onto the garden. Access is via three steps in slate stakes. To create a continuity, these same stakes of 2.50 m long are arranged on the lawn (on sand bed) at regular intervals and form a graphic path: physical and visual link very strong.

The cabanon

The cabanon

A corner to store everything

The landscaper has opted for a rough wooden garden shed, contemporary style, ready to assemble. To give it more cachet and integrate it into the decor, he painted it with a blue-gray hue that takes up the shades of slate.

The massifs partially conceal the shelter. Delimited by boxwood, they welcome hydrangeas, astilbes with vaporous white flowers, bellflowers with purple flowers, tiarelles and roses.

The basic rules for arranging a small garden
- Always start from a plan in order to have an overview of the project; this allows to visualize the circulations, the massifs and especially not to plant at random.
- Choose the right plants by calling in specialists if necessary.
- Treat the associations that will highlight each plant.
- To cope with the lack of space, create vanishing points using fireworks: play for example with amazing blooms over the seasons to attract attention.
- Regularly maintain your garden so as not to be overwhelmed by vegetation that becomes difficult to control if you expect too much.

The big lawn

The big lawn

Children's playground

Sown on about fifty centimeters of earth (on slab), the lawn is the children's favorite space for ball games. On both sides, it is lined with shrubs and, in the background, a row of Texas privet trees (Ligustrum texanum) cut to a curtain at 3 m height. Their evergreen foliage offers a permanent decor; in the spring, they adorn themselves with fragrant flowers that attract foraging insects.

Cloison the garden, it is multiply the chances of making discoveries every time one changes space.

A beautiful and functional space

Placed at one end of the garden, deckchairs allow those who occupy them to have an overview of the places. On the ground, slate stakes simply placed on a bed of sand are very stable and absorb the variations of ground level.

The Ipe openwork fence has a dual function: it creates a decorative background while concealing the installations (VMC, pipes...).
