The gardens of Roquelin, it is the adventure of a family arrived in 1999 with three young children on a farm to renovate surrounded by fields, in Loiret. After five years of colossal work, Stéphane Chassine managed to give life to the beautiful showcase he had imagined for his nursery. In the gardens, we discover mostly thousands of fragrant roses, specialty of the house that offers a hundred varieties for sale and five times more in presentation.

Stéphane Chassine

Stéphane Chassine produces on the spot a wide choice of varieties of roses, perennials and shrubs presented in the nursery and the adjacent sales area.

Labeled "remarkable garden" in 2011

The drawing of the garden is simple and airy. The decor is refined in the choice of colors, and natural wood structures. The plants seem to enjoy a resplendent health, quite extraordinary for a rose garden without fertilizers and chemical pesticides.

Albertine rose

On the pergola, the old rose 'Albertine'; a very fragrant liana rose blooming in July.

I have never considered gardens other than natural; it's essential for me, for my family and for the future of plants and soils.

Favorable terrain

The presence of the Loire flowing along the edge of the field is an advantage for the crop: it brings more ambient humidity in summer, and the soil is nourished with alluvium, very rich. In addition, roses are not compacted and have a lower risk of contracting diseases.

Roses in hedge

In hedge, varieties chosen for their strength and resistance: 'Mozart' and 'Moonlight' associated with 'Leander' with salmon pink, double and rising (David Austin).

Think wide and plan at least 1 meter between the feet, and even 1.50 to 2 meters around the shrubs!

Roses and flowers in massif

In massif, 'Blossomtime' goes well with Iris spuria as with other tall plants (delphiniums, peonies or cramps). This old variety with very full roses is very floriferous. She is going back.

Plant allies

Perennials help roses to defend themselves against invaders of all kinds. The borders of lavender and santolines block the ants, but welcome butterflies and other browsers, predators of other less desirable insects. These mellifers are aided by sagebrush, tanaisies and other species of plants. Soils such as perennial geraniums and euphorbias eliminate competition from other herbs, so that starting in May, weeding takes only two hours a week.

Rose Alfred Career

Filled on chestnut supports, vigorous and very vigorous shrubby varieties: 'Coraline', subtle pink and salmon, and 'Mrs Alfred Carrière', white, close the four squares of Pennisetum japonicum which symbolize a cloister in the heart of the rose garden.

Daily cleaning in the garden. Every morning, Stéphane reviews the clumps to eliminate flowers and faded leaves. This tour, fast in good weather, can become very laborious after a storm, but it is the sine qua non for keeping roses and perennials in shape all season long. Thus cleaned, they breathe and feed better, which gives hope for good recovery; moreover, it eliminates a good part of the infectious foci.
