Papyrus (Cyperus papyrus), houseplant in pot

Papyrus is a perennial rhizomatous plant found mainly in swamps and basins: it resembles grasses and sedges. The development of the papyrus starts from its roots from which stems interpose regularly. The stems, whose length is variable, terminate in narrow leaves, soft to drooping, arranged in a crown, of a deep green.

Yellowish spikelets appear umbel in the center of the leaves: it is the flowering. This gives a very beautiful ornamental effect that allows the papyrus to be also and especially a houseplant, because it is not very hardy, not resistant when the temperature approaches 0° C.

The Cyperus papyrus is best known for being the raw material in the making of parchments of the Egyptians.

The division of tufts can also be practiced very easily.
