The Rhaphiolepis, also erroneously called Raphiolepis or raphiolepid in everyday language, is a small compact shrub that comes from Asia and must be protected from the cold, its hardiness not being its strong point (-5° to -10° C if he is well protected). On the other hand, it thrives particularly well in dry, warm gardens because it has the advantage of tolerating and withstanding the drought and the intense heat of summer. It also supports sea spray and even pollution.

Rhaphiolepis umbellata

Its evergreen leaves are alternate, leathery, thick, lustrous, toothed, rather dark green and reach more or less 10 cm in length.

Its white flowers tinged with pink, star, reminiscent of apple blossoms, appear as early as May, and form clusters or light panicles at the end of the branches. They attract pollinating insects. Black berries succeed flowers and last a long time.
